Additionally, with spectral archives, the data submitter will not be required to divulge the sample source or the experimental conditions (save perhaps the organism), maintaining some measure of confidentiality. By not insisting on full disclosure of metadata while providing a useful service, spectral archives will be better positioned to attract users. Frank et al.’s clustering algorithm holds great promise as a game-changer in the field of computational proteomics. Today’s static, dataset-centric data repositories are a necessary first step, but they are far from being truly useful. Turning them into spectral archives—dynamic, spectrum-centric, interactive and hence immensely useful—is a tantalizing possibility.

Hydrogel Discs on Digital Microfluidic Devices for Proteomic Applications

We introduce the use of immobilized enzymes in hydrogels for proteomic sample processing in digital microfluidic systems. In this technique, pre-formed cylindrical agarose discs bearing immobilized enzymes were integrated into digital microfluidic devices bearing arrays of electrodes. In some experiments, fluorogenic enzyme substrates were delivered to gel discs which served as integrated micro...

A CFD Simulation of Hydrogen Production in Microreactors

In this study, the modeling of hydrogen production process in microreactors by methanol-steam reforming reaction is investigated. The catalytic reaction of methanol-steam reforming producing hydrogen is simulated considering a 3D geometry for the microreactor. To calculate diffusion among species, mixture average correlations are compared to Stephan-Maxwell equations. The reactions occurring in...

Fine structuration of low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) microreactors.

The development of microreactors that operate under harsh conditions is always of great interest for many applications. Here we present a microfabrication process based on low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology for producing microreactors which are able to perform chemical processes at elevated temperature (>400 °C) and against concentrated harsh chemicals such as sodium hydroxide, ...

Digital polymerase chain reaction in an array of femtoliter polydimethylsiloxane microreactors.

We developed a simple, compact microfluidic device to perform high dynamic-range digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) in an array of isolated 36-femtoliter microreactors. The density of the microreactors exceeded 20000/mm(2). This device, made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), allows the samples to be loaded into all microreactors simultaneously. The microreactors are completely sealed thro...

Ultrasound-Assisted Biodiesel Production in microreactors

The ultrasound-assisted (UA) soybean oil methanolysis using KOH as a catalyst was studied at different reaction conditions in a microreactor. Box–Behnken experimental design, with three variables, was performed and the effects of three reaction variables i.e. reaction temperature, catalyst concentration and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio on fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) yield were evaluated b...
